Peter Attia: What if we're wrong about diabetes?

As a young ER doctor, Peter Attia felt contempt for a patient with diabetes. She was overweight, he thought, and thus responsible for the fact that she needed a foot amputation. But years later, Attia received an unpleasant medical surprise that led him to wonder: is our understanding of diabetes right? Could the precursors to diabetes cause obesity, and not the other way around? A look at how assumptions may be leading us to wage the wrong medical war. Is there any biological make-up that leads someone to diabetes when taking no diet into account? If yes, what is that? When does it develop? What lets it come about?

i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after yrs of health issues, i look back and know i was insulin resistant for a good decade. in 9 months from diagnosis i have reversed my diabetes, still working on getting my muscles back and loving my diet, i eat like a fkin king! ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting were my keys. (keto is NOT like Atkins!) i started slowly by getting in to keto, it took 3 months to just get used to the different foods and get properly into keto, a further 3 months of massive weight loss followed. then and only then did i start intermittent fasting. and at the same time gave up the metformin, the stomach pills id been taking for 20 yrs, for a high acid problem. in fact i dont have any meds now for anything, seems most of my issues were diet/inflammation related. hope this helps others, do ur research! -- lower insulin peaks 1st, then reduce number of insulin peaks per day and ffs fix ur liver,, its self healing if treated right. your taste buds will adapt to this diet quite quickly and your old foods will become less pleasant (recently tried a pepsi, was foul). :)

Good God I am type 2 diabetic and I take my chances in not taking the shortcut and take metformin but rather look at myself and ask if I do really care about my body. Im in a journey of healing myself by trashing all the ones that keeps my insulin elevated such as rice, coke sugar . It's hard to say goodbye to the ones you have consume since childhood but it's better start now than being sorry. I hope I can get my body back to what it used to be after all the abused I did.

Humans are not designed to sit 8 hours a day nd eat fat sugar nd buns all day. One complete nd healthy meal a day is more than enough to not only survive but flourish. Dont live like animals. Pleasuring urself through food nd other stuff. Enjoy but BE HUMAN. Aim higher. I bet if you ate fruits vagetables nd whole foods Natural sugars like dates nd good sources of protein like legumes, lentils Meat eggs nd stuff on a balanced diet with lifestyles actually suited to a human being I dont thing u'd have all these horrendous diseases.

Yes, we are VERY wrong about Diabetes and Obesity. Follow the data, study the metadata on a regular basis to catch trends, study globally, and avoid confirmation bias. Don't study weight loss. It doesn't matter nearly as much as you think. We get it; restrict calories enough and you sometimes achieve short-term weight loss. Big Deal. What happens after that short term loss? Extreme metabolic chaos, often irreversible, often written into our genetic code to pass that chaos on to our children. Instead, study what happens before diabetes develops; study what reverses insulin resistance, study inflammatory markers associated with insulin resistance, study weight distribution longitudinally, through several generations. Study basal metabolic rate of people with upper body fat distribution--my basal metabolic rate is extremely high compared to other women my age, yet I'm fat. If I can walk at a slow mosey for 30 minutes every day, that fat goes away, and balance and vitality is restored. Also, you must presume that Type-II Diabetes has more than one etiology, and thus, requires more than one treatment protocol My diabetes is different than other people's diabetes. I know this because my blood sugars react the exact opposite as other diabetics. My blood sugars decrease when I take corticosteroids, and decrease after I eat breakfast in the morning. The only time my blood sugars go high is when 1: I am ill, or have an inflammatory flare-up; and 2: I forget to eat breakfast. PLEASE look at the data with a new set of eyes.

His young thought: Woman is obese. Obesity causes Type-2 Diabetes. She was in control of being obese. Therefore she is responsible. His Critique: We don't know, if obesity is the cause for Type-2-Diabetes. Maybe insuline resistance is the cause for obesity which then maybe enhances Type-2 Diabetes and its symptoms. His thought now: Intake of refined sugar and simple grains causes insuline-resistance. Now my critique: It's absolutely common-sense, that refined sugar and simple grains aren't healthy. The new cause-effect chain: Woman is obese, because she has insuline-resistance. She has insuline-resistance, probably because of her intake of refined sugars and simple grains like white bread. She knew that it might be unhealthy and she was in full control of her intake of sugar etc. Therefore she can be held responsible. I don't get why the twist of cause and effect could logically change the question of responsibility? I assume I did not understand his thesis. Maybe someone can help me :)

Thanks Dr. Attia, a fan, and as a user the issue is Modern medicine has abandoned “Root Cause” investigations in favor of “Diagnosis and Drugs” … seems odd as metabolism is a “Response Mechanism” … and we are seeing the results of Medicine by Chemistry, without “Root Cause Analysis” ... 70 Going On 100 … the Centenarian Diet … maybe 70 Going On 128 … the Hayflick Limit … or if a fan of Ray Kurzweil … then this is all a Moot Point.

Thank you for your humility. As a fat woman, I am often judged by doctors and don't receive the type of response I need. I have been finding my help from others who have walked this same road. And yes, it's about the grains, the starchy carbs that turn to glucose and cause more hunger... an endless, vicious cycle Big Pharma drools over. One day, I will be that formerly fat woman, but it won't be because medical doctors have helped me other than to try to throw statins, diet pills and surgery at me, all the while preaching about low fat, fat-free and diet margarine. smh

Due to an elongated stay in hospitals/at-home rest because of a life threatening car wreck, and made to stay in bed 6 months, I gained 100+ lbs, becoming diabetic... Due to the metabolic syndrome issues/signs; my weight fluctuated HIGHER WEEKLY UNTIL the doctor prescribed the correct diabetic medication. I simply was not eating... that would justify the weight gain I was experiencing. So this doctor has hit on something!!! I'd always heard that as a diabetic you'd lose a significant amount of weight; that has not happened to me.

You are brilliant!! I'm not obese or fat, but my blood sugars went so out of control I became a diabetic! Problem with me is I also have a chronic liver disease, severe hypertension , bulky spleen and myoclonus. I just wanted to say forgive yourself first and she will forgive you. Every time it into a hospital there's a stigma attached to my liver disease. I contracted through blood transfusions, but some of the er doctors judge me before asking how I contracted it? Even though I could be quite sick, and need to go to the hospital, I think my time I think about it I think long and hard to the point where my children have to force me to go. I've told my specialists and doctors and they've actually cried and held my hand because it is so humiliating have all these eyes on you thinking your something that you're not in some of the doctors actually say it out loud. I remember being admitted to hospital for pancreatitis due to a lot of the clinical trials and when I asked do I drink? I said of course not! This ER doctor reaction was "yeah sure you don't drink" even though I was in so much pain I with the idea out of my hand covered it with a paper towel grab my stuff and left. That was a dangerous stunt I took upon myself as I was quite sick and probably will never do that again! However, that's how the impact, of an we doctor has on his patients. Not wanting to be humiliated and embarrassed by a doctor, who doesn't know his butt from his head, I must say I am very proud of you! As a mother of two young adults one having a child of her own, I feel this maternal instinct when you were crying and I just had to say this. People will hear you and I hope most of the people are the ER doctors. they really need to learn some humility. Thank you for sharing with all of us that are watching! Your Brilliant❣🇨🇦

Here I would like to say that doctors are sometime considering or planning from the other side. I am not saying that they are wrong because they know better than the patient but their way of thinking sometimes put them on the wrong side. How a person who walk and exercise daily and eat according to the plan and then get sick? This is something we are not able to understand but in this video, it is shown that we all have different diseases. We cure for one but that does not mean that other disease will certainly get better it might be the other way around. As the Dr. disclosed two cases of cancer and obesity how they can come this far? We have different versions of replies might every aspect is wrong but we can imagine or we can start from a point. I think obesity is in the mind of the patient when he started the insulin the patient thought now I have much more problems concerning with this. So then the obesity starts and then they can grow along with the disease.

Contrary to what Peter says, people DO still have personal responsibility for their actions, i.e. diet and exercise.  I experienced the exact same dramatic weight loss and restoration of insulin sensitivity he did by stopping my consumption of refined carbs and sugar.  That was a personal choice to start eating healthy.  Your BENEFIT if you choose it and your FAULT if you don't.  Eat healthy and exercise right, or you may just have a random doctor standing over you in the ED some day telling you that your foot needs to come off.

He is right. Changing your diet can get rid of the weight and exercise give you a way to burn energy but it has an unidentified metabolic cause. Getting fat is the result, compounding the issue. I think it is maybe the result of 1950's nuke testing. Thyroid related??? An interesting clue is that Psoriasis is also highly associated with the disease. (this also is considered incurable).

Years ago, the school of medicine was apart of the school of public health. Once the institution decided to separate the two schools, doctors no longer treat the root causes of diseases. Most are legal drug dealers "practicing medicine". Not all doctors are basic in their understanding; there are some that are truly epidemiogist. I agree with Dr Attia; experience makes a difference and process food is a beast.

I've listened to this man 3 times -- every time I hear of somebody having diabetes. What he's saying is that processed/fast food/sodas have created an endocrine storm in the body. Keeping millions of people in a state of chronic illness is very good for business. That's what the profit motive leads to. When the medical establishment puts their attention on profits, everybody loses.

In my opinion obesity and insulin resistance are the effect of eating too much food of a certain kind like for example grains or fruits and also eating some food we are not adapted to, like for example milk or grains. I had some serious sympthoms of low cortisol extreme chronic dehydration and fatigue. It was a state of body inflamation that could 've lead to diabetes as well. I was on cortisol replacement for about one year. Eventually, It turned out that giving up to grains mainly wheat and corn wheat would solve the problem. Also reducing snacks and concentrate on balanced meals helped considerably. It's been an year now since I tool my last dose of cortisol which if you don't know is very difficult to give up. However imagine everyone would give up these. Most People will start feeling better but it would be a economical disaster.
